[Review][Single] INFINITE – “The Chaser”

Since their debut, Infinite has been one of K-Pop’s most exciting and talented boy bands, wowing us with their synchronized stage moves and Sweetune-produced sound. But fame didn’t come to them overnight. They spent more than a year releasing moderately-successful singles before breaking out with the beautiful “Be Mine” last July, and then they sealed the deal with their follow-up hit “Paradise”. Now they’re cementing their status as the hottest thing since spicy kimchi with what might just be their greatest song to date, “The Chaser”.

I’ve sang the praises of K-Pop production team Sweetune many times before, and I’m not about to stop now. They’re one of the best pop producers in the world, crafting mega-hits for the likes of Infinite and KARA, on top of their more underrated –but just as flawless– work with Rainbow, Nine Muses, f(x), and SPICA.  The best thing about Sweetune is that they don’t recycle songs like some other producers do, and instead create music that’s unique to the artist they’re working with, with the same level of quality given to everyone, whether you’re a superstar like KARA or still rising like Nine Muses.

Sweetune found their signature sound for Infinite with “Be Mine”, and now they’ve evolved it with “The Chaser”. The production is pure ’80s through-and-through: a synth-rock blitz of jagged electric guitar riffs and funky guitar chords. The flurry of electronic keys that whiz past and drop out on the opening verse is one of the best things I’ve heard all year, and would make the perfect soundtrack for any early ’80s movie montage. The instrumental is very rich and one of the most frantic and intense that Sweetune has ever produced, with an anxious build-up on the verses and an explosive chorus that matches the dramatic exhilaration of a blockbuster car chase.

One of Infinite’s unique points is the way they approach rapping in their songs. Rather than just dropping a few bars on the bridge like most K-Pop groups, they litter multiple rap breaks through their songs and split them between members Hoya and Dong Woo. It sounds great, and adds a lot of variety to “The Chaser”. One second someone is singing, the next second they’re rapping, and the next they’re all harmonizing together.

Lyrically, “The Chaser” is set up a lot like a similarly-themed sequel to “Be Mine”. In “Be Mine”, Infinite professed their devotion to a crush and vowed to protect her and relieve all her worries. In “The Chaser”, they’ve already got the girl but she’s dumped them and split, leaving Infinite to run after the dumb broad with more promises of love and protection. She doesn’t seem interested, but they keep pursuing her at the risk of their own heart. It’s total stalking, but who the hell wouldn’t want to be hunted down by an obsessive Infinite? It’s the kind of thing that many fangirls (and some fanboys too, I’m sure) dream about.

The official music video for “The Chaser” is everything I want to see from an Infinite MV: hardcore dancing. The boys’ famous synchronized choreography is better than Janet Jackson at her peak, and it’s like Christmas day every time they release a new single just to check out their latest moves. There’s an intro and outro of L suffering a crazy car accident and some other scenes of the members chasing things, but it was the epic dancing and the members’ charisma that caught my eye the most.

Competition has been heating up lately, but “The Chaser” is flawless enough for Infinite to continue their rapid rise to the top-tiers of the boy band hierarchy. After all, it’s only one of the best K-Pop songs of the entire year.

Infinite achieves an all-kill with their new title song, “The Chaser”!

Infinite has achieved an all-kill with their latest release.

On May 15th, idol group Infinite swept the charts with their title song “The Chaser” from their new mini-album ‘Infinite’.

“The Chaser” ranked #1 on Mnet, Cyworld Music, Bugs Music, Melon, Mnet, Soribada, and Olleh Music. Infinite’s other tracks “Feel So Bad“, “That Summer“, “I Like You“, and “With” ranked high on the charts as well.

Their title song “The Chaser” is a song produced by Sweetune, and is receiving interest for it’s contemporary beat.

Congratulations to Infinite!

Infinite cares about their looks now then their debut days?

Group Infinite discussed the visual changes within the group since their debut.

During an interview held at the Seoul Olympic Hall on May 15th, member Woo Hyun stated, “Many have complemented us that our looks have improved since our debut.”

He continued, “We weren’t too concerned about our looks when we made our debut. However, now we all receive special skin treatments and our make-up artists also pay more attention to details than before to try to help us look even better.”

‘Visual’ member L also added, “All the members are gradually finding their own style. Now each member has a hairstyle and stage outfit that suit them well.”

Regarding the question on who changed the most since their debut, leader Sung Gyu answered, “I think it would be Sung Jong, who recently turned legal. Not only his looks, but also his personality has grown more manly and mature.”

In addition, Woo Hyun stated, “We transformed our image for our comeback by cutting my hair short, Dong Woo dying his hair blue, and Hoya dying his hair purple.”

In related news, Infinite released their mini-album, ‘Infinitize’, on May 15th. This album contains a total of 7 tracks with the title-song being “The Chaser” (Check out the MV here), which is a fast-paced song produced by Sweetune.

Lee Joon admits he planned to become an "ulzzang??"

MBLAQ‘s Lee Joon shared a few photos of himself that were taken during his younger years.

On the May 1st episode of SBS ‘Strong Heart‘, Lee Joon remarked, “My life has unfolded according to my thorough planning.”

“I purposely uploaded my photos onto a famous ‘ulzzang’ (best face) site, and I immediately earned an explosive response,” he said. “I became an ulzzang the very next day.”

Seeing the old photos of Lee Joon, the other guests on set remarked that he resembled singer Rain.

Though he appeared to be posing naturally, Lee Joon admitted that the photos were premeditated. “Truth is, I asked my friend who studied photography to expertly organize the background and the lights. We even calculated the angle of my eyes and the shape of my lips,” causing everyone to laugh at his frank and silly confession.

Lee Joon uses profanity on SBS 'Strong Heart?'

MBLAQ‘s Lee Joon drew attention for his ability to use profanity, despite being an idol star.
On the May 1st broadcast of SBS ‘Strong Heart‘, Super Junior‘s Eunhyuk questioned Lee Joon about his relationship with actress Jung Ryeo Won.
“I know that Ryeo Won had asked Donghae for Lee Joon’s number,” he said. “I want to know what happened afterwards.”
“Ryeo Won noona personally called me to cast me for a cameo role playing her boyfriend in ‘Salary Man‘,” Lee Joon said.
“There was a scene where she needed to use profanity really well, but she doesn’t really use such words and couldn’t seem to pull it off,” he continued. “We filmed that profanity scene for about 5 hours.”

“To teach him the Seoul lifestyle, we would spend our time taking classes with neighborhood ahjummas at the gym in the morning and spray perfume samples on each other at makeup stores in the afternoon.”

“Although Yonghwa is currently more handsome than I am, I was more popular with girls at the time. However, Yonghwa debuted first through CNBLUE, and they hit the jackpot.”

In related news, MBLAQ is to hold their first solo concert tour, ‘THE BLAQ% TOUR‘ beginning in Indonesia on June 30th.

Lee Joon's Idea Type? Secret's Hyo Sung? ^^

MBLAQ‘s Lee Joon publicly admitted his ideal type to be SECRET‘s Hyosung, even with her fellow member Sunhwa sitting beside him on ’Happy Together‘.
On the April 26th episode of KBS2TV ’s ‘Happy Together 3, guest Han Sunhwa of girl group SECRET remarked that Lee Joon was ruining her recovered image.
“When I told my mom that I was going to be on the same variety show as Lee Joon, my mom told me not to go on it,” Sunhwa said. “She asked why I would make an appearance with Lee Joon again, after I worked so hard to recover my image with my airport fashion and CFs.”
Lee Joon grew extremely upset after hearing that, stating that he did not think there was anything wrong with him. Sunhwa then realized Lee Joon’s mother could be watching the program, and she respectfully apologized.
The MCs then asked Lee Joon to apologize to Sunhwa’s mother as well, through a personal video message.
Lee Joon displayed his quirky sense of humor by unexpectedly saying in the message, “My ideal type is actually Jun Hyosung but I became a fan of Han Sunhwa after seeing a whole new side of her. I am jealous,” causing everyone on set to roar in laughter.

Infinite releases their new track, "Only Tears"

Infinite is back with a fresh new ballad track!

"Only Tears" was a song, first performed at Infinite's encore concert back in April, and it is now finally available for fans anywhere to enjoy! Though Sung Gyu performed the song solo at the concert, the studio version of "Only Tears", produced by hit-maker Sweetune, features the emotional vocals of all seven members. The song is a sad one that sings of a man who believes he is far from good enough to take care of the woman he loves, and the lyrical and romantic strings melody well accompanies the individual charms and appeals of the boys. The harmony of "Only Tears" is sure to stir the hearts of their loyal fans who have been eagerly waiting for their comeback.

Check the song, "Only Tears" just below as we patiently wait for the release of their third mini album, "Infinitize" on May 15th. :)
